ISO 3166-2: CA
The list of ISO-3166-2 codes for Canada contains the codes for the provinces and territories .
The codes consist of two parts separated by a hyphen. The first part gives the country code according to ISO 3166-1 (for Canada CA
), the second the code for province or territory.
The current codes are on the side of the ISO under #iso: code: 3166: CA available.
The country codes consist of two letters, all of which are based on the post geocodes of the Canadian Post Office. They were revised three times in total, in 2000 and twice in 2002. In the first ISO newsletter (published on May 21, 2000) Nunavut was added as the third territory with the geocode NU
. A year later, Labrador was added to Newfoundland, so the name had to be changed (change announced in the second newsletter, although the code stayed the same). The ISO only caught up with this in 2002 in the fourth newsletter (ISO 3166-2: 2002-12-10) of December 12, 2002 and changed the code from NF
in NL
.
