Ian Clark Hutchison

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ian Clark Hutchison DL (born January 4, 1903 in Leith (now Edinburgh ), † February 2, 2002 ) was a Scottish politician.

Life

Hutchison was born in 1903 to George Aitken Clark Hutchison , who would later represent the constituency of Midlothian and Peebles Northern in the British House of Commons . His younger brother Michael Clark Hutchison was also active in politics and held the lower house mandate of the Edinburgh South constituency for 18 years . Hutchison attended the Edinburgh Academy as well as the Royal Military College of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight and the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth . In 1916 he joined the Royal Navy and served there until 1931. With the outbreak of World War II , he was reactivated and remained in the rank of Lieutenant Commander until 1943 . Hutchison was a member of the Royal Company of Archers , the royal bodyguard in Scotland. In 1958 he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Edinburgh . He passed away in 2002 at the age of 99.

Political career

After completing his military duties in 1935, Hutchison embarked on a political career and was elected to Edinburgh City Council. In the general election of 1935 , he first ran for national elections when he ran for the Unionist Party for the lower house mandate of the Glasgow Maryhill constituency . However, Hutchison had to admit defeat to Labor candidate John James Davidson and missed entry into the House of Commons.

When his party colleague Thomas Cooper returned the mandate of the constituency of Edinburgh West in 1941 , Hutchison ran for the by-elections that were due. Without an opponent, he received the mandate and moved into the British House of Commons for the first time. Despite the high national losses of the Conservative Party and the Unionist Party in Scotland, Hutchison just held his mandate against the challengers of the Labor and Liberal Party in the 1945 elections . In the following general election in 1950 , 1951 and 1955 , he held his mandate. In the general election in 1959 , Hutchison did not run. His party colleague Anthony Stodart held the mandate for the Unionist Party.
