Ian Graeme Barbour

Ian Graeme Barbour (born October 5, 1923 in Beijing , † December 24, 2013 in Minneapolis ) was an American philosopher of science and theologian . He is considered the founder of the interdisciplinary compartment science and religion (Engl. Science and Religion ).

Life

Ian G. Barbour was born in Beijing in 1923 and spent his childhood in China , England and the USA . He studied physics at Duke University in Durham , North Carolina and later theology at Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut . In 1955 he founded the Department of Religion at Carleton College in Northfield , Minnesota and also taught physics.

In the 1960s, Barbour developed a scientific methodology for researching the relationship between science and religion . His work Issues in Science and Religion , published in 1966, is considered the cornerstone of the academic subject "Science and Religion". He has also published several works on ethics and modern technology.

In 1986 he retired .

In 1999 Barbour received the Templeton Prize for his book Progress in Religion . He donated one million of the $ 1.26 million prize money to the Center for Theology and Natural Sciences at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley .
