Erik Vanspauwen and Christophe Chantzis - songwriters and producers of Ian Van Dahl

Ian Van Dahl was a dance formation from Belgium , consisting of the singer and songwriter Annemie Anne Francine Coenen (born July 14, 1978 in Herk-de-Stad , Belgium), the songwriters and producer Christophe Chantzis (born September 22, 1976) and Erik Vanspauwen (born May 17, 1968). Other producers were Peter Luts (born December 14, 1971) and David Vervoort (born December 28, 1977 in Bonheiden , Belgium) (also the producers of Lasgo ).

Ian Van Dahl is one of the most successful dance acts in the world. Ian Van Dahl has sold almost four million records (singles and albums) worldwide and toured not only in her home country Belgium, but also in Australia, North America (USA, Canada, Mexico), South America (Brazil, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago), Asia (Russia, Japan, Lebanon, Dubai, Bahrain), Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland, Norway) and other European countries (Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Hungary, Estonia, Malta) on the stage .

Annemie not only writes a large part of Ian Van Dahl's lyrics herself, but is also active as a songwriter for other dance projects for producers Peter Luts and David Vervoort. She co-wrote most of the lyrics to Lasgo's 2005 album “Far Away”. The lyrics of Outrowz feat. New-G - Wrong! and Peter Luts feat. Nivelle - Don't Go are also from her pen. Annemie is also responsible for Ian Van Dahl's fashion outfits on stage and in the videos.

history

2000–2002: beginnings and first great successes

Ian Van Dahl was founded in early 2000 by Erik Vanspauwen, his brother Geert and Martine "Marsha" Theeuwen. Shortly thereafter, Geert Vanspauwen was replaced by Christophe Chantzis and the first single Castles In The Sky was released on vinyl in Belgium. The lyrics as well as the vocals are from Marsha. The song was already a surprising success in the dance charts and in autumn of the same year a remix by producer Peter Luts was released as a single in Belgium and shortly afterwards in Germany. In her home country Castles In The Sky did not enter the chart, but in the neighboring country she reached number 43 in the singles and even number 2 in the dance charts. Gradually, the top 10 positions in the dance / club charts appeared internationally. Despite the great success of the first single, Ian Van Dahl's record label Antler Subway no longer wanted the singer Marsha under contract for unknown reasons and replaced her with Cindy Mertens, who was then replaced a short time later by the final singer Annemie Coenen. With her voice, Castles In The Sky was re-recorded and released in other countries, including Great Britain , where the single made it to number 3. It was not only there that it immediately became a commercial success. Ian Van Dahl won the Best Hi NRG / Euro 12 "vinyl WMC (Winter Music Conference) Award 2001 with Castles In The Sky in early 2002. In Great Britain, Ian Van Dahl won the" Dancestar World Music Award "in the" Best Trance Act "and the" Top of The Pops Award "in the" Best Dance Act "category.

The second single Will I? (2001/2002) followed on from the success of the first single, in some cases even higher positions in the charts could be achieved. In Great Britain, but also in Brazil , the song was a great success. In Belgium Will I? to Ian Van Dahl's greatest success. In the associated video clip (not like Castles In The Sky ) Annemie Coenen can also be seen as a performer.

In March 2002 the single Reason was released. Annemie Coenen also took part in the songwriting for the first time. The first album was released shortly afterwards. The name of the album "Ace" was chosen - a composition from the first letters of the members of Ian Van Dahl ( A nnemie, C hristophe, E rik) - or in memory of the great success of the first singles the term "Ace" ( Ass - the term for an unmatched serve in tennis). The album was particularly successful in Great Britain, where it reached gold status within three weeks with around 100,000 copies sold . Ace's songs were almost without exception written by Coenen, Chantzis and Vanspauwen, and Pascale Feront, the singer of the dance act Absolom, co-wrote .

In late summer 2002 Try was decoupled from Ace . For the single release, the song was given a new sound. Although its success declined in some countries, Try made it to number 32 in 2002 in the Euro200 Chart (a summary of the national chart values in the European Union ). A little later, the song Secret Love was awarded double A in Germany together with Try -Single released, but without great success. On the single, Secret Love contains a completely different text than on the album.

2003–2005: Second album and decline in success

In October 2003 it was announced that the new single would be a song called I Can't Let You Go . From then on, Peter Luts and David Vervoort, the producers of Lasgo , were also involved in the production. With this single the success continued to decline, in Great Britain it only reached number 20. Another new single, Where Are You Now? (2004), was also less successful and was only published in a few countries, including Belgium and Finland . In April 2004, Ian Van Dahl's second album, Lost & Found, was released . The two-sidedness of the title points to the loss of Annemie Coenen's grandfather and some friends, but also to the great success with Ian Van Dahl, the broad support of the fans and new friends. Coenen again played a key role in the songwriting. Many fans, but also critics, described this album as much more emotional and profound than its predecessor. However, these aspects could not have materially affected commercial success. Likewise, the next single, Believe , which was only released in Great Britain and Ireland , could no longer match the success of the first few years.

The last single from the album Lost & Found , Inspiration , became more successful again . The rather unusual title even reached number 11 in Denmark , but it did not even reach the top 40 in Great Britain.

In 2004 Ian Van Dahl organized several concerts in Brazil, where mainly songs from the second album were played.

At the end of 2005 another completely new production was released. The title of the new single was Movin 'On . The song was a ballad with an electronic sound. This single was more successful again, with the exception of Belgium (24th) and Finland (even 7th), it flopped in Europe , but reached the top 10 in Brazil.

2006–2008: withdrawal and dissolution

After the release of the again less successful single Just A Girl in July 2006, Ian Van Dahl could be seen again several times live in Brazil, where Annemie Coenen also appeared together with Lasgo. In 2007 they withdrew almost completely.

At the beginning of July 2007, producer Peter Luts announced that Ian Van Dahl's third album had been recorded, but that this would be released as a solo album by Annemie Coenen. This had already become apparent after producers Christophe Chantzis and Erik Vanspauwen had withdrawn: In an interview with Annemie Coenen at the end of April 2007, we can read that the third album is currently being recorded and will be released in a few months. Coenen notes that most of the songs on the album were penned by her and Lut.

In mid-January 2008 it became known that the formation Ian Van Dahl was disbanded. Annemie Coenen is now the singer of the new dance project AnnaGrace , with Peter Luts as producer.

former members

Marsha aka Martine Theeuwen

Marsha - singer and lyricist for Castles In The Sky

Marsha's real name is Martine Danny Jozefa Theeuwen (born October 7, 1976 in Neerpelt , Belgium ). The Ian Van Dahl project started with her, Erik Vanspauwen and Erik's brother Geert. Marsha wrote the lyrics and melody for Castles In The Sky . Marsha's voice can be heard on the accompanying single and video. After the enormous international success of this song, the record company did not want her to perform as a singer for unknown reasons, even though she was ready to do so. Marsha has been replaced, she cannot be seen in the video for Castles In The Sky , her song was re-recorded with Annemie Coenen and appears in this form on the album "Ace" and not the original version with the voice of Marsha. In retrospect, it turned out that the record company had never intended to send Marsha on stage. Deeply disappointed, she declined the offer of another single with Ian Van Dahl.

Cindy Mertens

Cindy Mertens was Marsha's first replacement. She can be seen in the video for Castles In The Sky to the voice of Marsha. Cindy was selected by the record company for the first national Belgian and international appearances for Castles In The Sky - all to the singing of Marsha. Cindy Mertens did not sing either during the performances or in the video. Due to a lack of skill in these lip-synced performances and a disastrous stage presence, she was replaced relatively quickly by Annemie Coenen.
