Ib Hansen

Ib Hansen (born December 22, 1928 in Copenhagen ; † February 24, 2013 ) was a Danish opera singer (baritone / bass baritone) and actor .

Life

Hansen was born in the Vanløse district in western Copenhagen. At the beginning of his career he worked as a driver for a laundry. He initially received private vocal training from Kristian Riis. He then studied singing at the Opera School of the Royal Opera in Copenhagen. He made his debut as an opera singer in 1957 at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen in the opera The Bartered Bride . In 1958 he had his first big stage success there with the title role of the opera Gianni Schicchi . Hansen was a permanent member of the ensemble at that house for over thirty years, where he sang mostly in Danish, first as a light baritone, later as a bass baritone. His voice was big, expressive and recognizable.

There he first sang the Italian subject, focusing on the character roles and dramatic baritone roles in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini . His repertoire included the title role in Rigoletto , Giorgio Germont in La traviata , Renato in Un ballo in maschera , Count Luna in Il trovatore , Marquis von Posa in Don Carlos , Jago in Otello , Marcello in La Bohème and again and again Baron Scarpia in Tosca . In the early 1970s he sang the title role of Simone Boccanegra , in a production by Götz Friedrich (conductor: Giuseppe Patanè ). In the 1975/76 season he sang the title role in a new production of the opera Fürst Igor at the Royal Copenhagen Opera (premiere: January 1976, director: Harry Kupfer ).

In the further course of his career he also took on lyrical and dramatic roles in the German subject: Wolfram von Eschenbach in Tannhäuser , Amfortas in Parsifal (in the original language, premiere: 1977/78 season at the Royal Copenhagen Opera, staging: Harry Kupfer), Jochanaan in Salome and (in a television performance) Dr. Nice in Lulu . He also sang some bass roles, such as Mephisto in Faust and the title role in Boris Godunow , and later Pimen (new production, premiere: April 1988, director: Harry Kupfer) in the same opera. In the 1987/88 season he sang the role of Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte at the Royal Copenhagen Opera .

Hansen also appeared in operas by Danish and Swedish composers. He interpreted Stig in the tragic opera Drot og Marsk by Peter Heise , the two roles Henrik / Jeronimus in the opera Masquerade by Carl Nielsen and the monkeys in the opera Animalen by Lars Johan Werle (1926–2001).

Hansen has made guest appearances at various opera houses in Scandinavia and Berlin . He was also active as a concert and lieder singer and took part in programs on Danish television.

In 1974 he was appointed royal court singer and chamber singer . In 1988 he was awarded the Dannebrogden for his artistic merits .

Hansen also worked as an actor in several films, such as the director and bar-goer in the Danish crime comedy Die Olsenbande flies über die Planke (1981) and in Lars von Trier's Epidemic (1987) . In the Danish television series Een gang strømer… (1987) he played the role of police chief Bjarkeby.
