After a punk concert in Berlin, Markus made friends with the music producer Axel Klopprogge. He had the idea of ​​founding an NDW band with Markus as the singer. The rehearsals took place in Klopprogge's youth room. At first, Klopprogge finished the melody for I want to have fun , but the right text was still missing. At first the title of the song should be I want dance . The passage Germany, Germany do you feel me? was originally Rosi, Rosi do you feel me? after the Spider Murphy Gang had also sung a Rosi with Scandal in the restricted area , the original text was discarded. As Mark and Klopprogge together on the highway were traveling and from a well-tempered motorists with sunglasses and Walkman - headphones were overhauled, Klopprogge came the idea to the final text.

In a newly built recording studio in Frankfurt-Oberrad , Klopprogge had the task of installing the technology. At night he secretly recorded the written songs with Markus. The owner of the recording studio discovered this, however, and presented both of them with an invoice for 15,000 marks. Then the two went to the record company CBS Schallplatten GmbH and played them the half-finished songs, including I want fun , live. After consultation, the then head of marketing Gerd Gebhardt stated that the record company had signed both of them.

In October 2015, an advertising campaign started promoting the Deutschlandcard . Here Markus sang his own version of the song.

Commercial win

I want fun entered the German single charts at number 22 on June 7, 1982 . In the third week of the chart, the song reached the top 10 for the first time in eighth place . On August 2, 1982, almost two months after entering the chart, I will fun was able to reach the top position in the German single charts . After the song had been relegated one place in the following week, on August 16, 1982 it was again possible to hold first place for a week. The single remained in the top 10 until the beginning of October 1982, and I want fun stayed there for 15 weeks. On November 15th, after 24 weeks in the German single charts, I will have fun with position 65, the last place in this. For Markus this was the only number one hit, his successor singles could no longer build on this success.
