Ida Haendel
Ida Haendel , CBE (born December 15, 1928 in Chełm , † June 30, 2020 in Miami , according to other sources July 1, 2020 in Pembroke Park , Florida ) was a British violinist of Polish origin. She is considered one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century .
Live and act
Ida Haendel was born in Chełm in eastern Poland in 1928 into a Jewish family. She began to teach herself melodies and pieces of music on her sister's violin at the age of three, and then received violin lessons. Presumably at the age of six she was accepted as a student of Mieczysław Michałowicz , a student of Leopold Auer , at the Warsaw Music Academy . At the age of six, she made it to the finals of the Wieniawski Competition in March 1935 as the youngest participant and reached seventh place - Ginette Neveu , then 16, and David Oistrach , then 27, took the first two places. In 1935 the family moved to London and they studied with Carl Flesch , who was so impressed by her talent that he offered her free lessons. Ida Haendel took lessons from the violinist, pianist and composer George Enescu in Paris, which Flesch did not approve of.
In 1939 she became a British citizen. During the Second World War , she performed mainly in front of American and British troops and played in factories. Her world career began after 1945.
In the 1950s she moved to Montreal, Canada and later, in 1979, to Miami, USA. An autobiography appeared in 1970 under the title Woman with Violin . In 1991 she received the Order of the British Empire .
According to her, the Swede Allan Pettersson was the most interesting composer she had ever met. She inspired him to write his 2nd violin concerto, which he dedicated to her and which she first performed in Germany in 1989. But she also mastered the classical-romantic repertoire, and particularly with Jean Sibelius and Johann Sebastian Bach she had “seriousness, vital passion and impressive immersion”. German music, she is quoted as saying, has always been a matter close to her heart.
She had a long friendship and artistic collaboration with the Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache . David Garrett was one of her students .
She played a violin by Antonio Stradivari from 1696 and another by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù .
In 2006 she appeared before Pope Benedict XVI. in Auschwitz .
Ida Haendel died on June 30, 2020 at the age of 91 in Miami.
