history

It is possible that the city is already mentioned in the Mahabharata epic under its previous name Ilvadurg . In historical times it came under the rule of the Bhils and was one of the most important cities in the region. It is said that one of their princes ( Vappa Rawal ) became the founder of the Mewar dynasty in southeastern Rajasthan in the 7th or 8th century . For a time Idar was ruled by Chittorgarh . At the end of the 12th century, the then ruler joined the Prince of Delhi, Prithviraj III. Chauhan , in his fight against advancing Islamic armies; however, he was defeated in the Battle of Tarain (1192). Centuries of decline followed, in which, however, the Rao dynasty was able to establish itself, which was replaced by the Rathod dynasty of Marwar in 1728 . In 1924 the princely state of Idar was annexed by the British to the Western India States Agency . After India's independence (1947), the area was divided between Rajasthan and Gujarat.
