If You Don't Know Me by Now is a 1972 song by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes that was both written and produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. It appeared on the album I Miss You .

history

Originally the song was intended for the group The Dells and later also for Patti LaBelle , who later sang a live version of the song, but both declined at the time. Through Teddy Pendergrass (who was a member of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes), the song went to his band Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

It was released on September 29, 1972. In the list of " Songs of the Century " by the Recording Industry Association of America , the song can be found at number 199 and can also be heard in the film The Law of Power .

In 1989 Simply Red recorded the song for their album A New Flame . Originally, the producer of the cover, Stewart Levine, didn't want orchestral backing vocals at all, but later he made a decision. According to an interview, Mick Hucknall , the singer of the band Simply Red, has been enthusiastic about the original since he was thirteen. At the Grammy Awards 1990 the band won with their version in the category " Best R&B Song ". The cover was also used in the games Lips for the Xbox 360 as well as Karaoke Revolutions and the film American Psycho .
