The Ikarus C42 is a two-seater ultralight aircraft made by Comco Ikarus GmbH in Mengen / Baden-Württemberg. It has been in production since 1996. In each of the years from 2009 to 2015, the C42 was the best-selling microlight aircraft in Germany.
The C42 is mainly used as a training and leisure aircraft. It is also approved as a towing aircraft for gliders (up to 650 kg) or banners and for lowering parachutists . Waterplane and sprayplane versions are also available.
construction
The Icarus C42 is a abgestrebter Hochdecker and is optionally substituted by a 80- or 100-PS four cylinder - four cycle - Boxer engine manufacturer Rotax driven. The high speed of the motor is transmitted to the propeller via a reduction gear (2.27: 1/80 HP or 2.43: 1/100 HP). The basic structure of the construction is an aluminum tube that runs lengthways through the fuselage. The cabin and the fuselage are made of glass fiber reinforced plastic . The wings are constructed in a tube-fabric construction. Winglets made of carbon are attached to the wing ends.
control
The ailerons and elevators are operated with the joystick located in the middle between the two seats . The lever for the brake is also attached to this control stick. The trimming of the elevator is either mechanically or electrically. The nose wheel and the rudder are controlled using conventionally arranged pedals. The motor control is operated via a lever between the legs. This lever can be folded down for easier entry and exit. The two-stage flaps are locked into place using a lever placed in the center of the ceiling. A three-stage electric flap control is optionally available.
A special feature is that the C42 can also be equipped with a handicapped control, which allows the aircraft to be controlled without using the legs. A modified throttle shaft including a throttle lever extension and an additional rudder control lever are used here. This rudder control lever, which can be operated with the left hand, controls the rudder and the nose wheel.

Incidents
On August 23, 2015, two Ikarus C42 flying in formation collided at an air show in Dittingen (Switzerland). One of the machines crashed into a barn, killing the pilot. The pilot of the other machine survived thanks to the total rescue system .

particularities
In conjunction with the Rotax 912 ULS (74 kW / 100 PS), certain 3-blade propellers and other special equipment, the Ikarus C42 can be used as a towing aircraft for gliders. The maximum nominal breaking strength of the predetermined breaking point must not exceed 300 daN . Banner tows may also be carried out with the smaller Rotax 912 UL (59 kW / 80 PS).
For photo flights or to drop a parachutist, either one or both doors can be removed, but the maximum permissible speed is then only 150 km / h, when flap level 2 is set, strong turbulence can occur in the interior due to the design.
