occupation

The 6 Kummer-Buben is a Swiss Heimatfilm by Franz Schnyder from 1968. It is based on the youth novel of the same name by Elisabeth Müller from 1942.

action

The story is about day laborer Gottfried Kummer, his wife Sofie and their six sons. She reports on the hard everyday life and financial worries of the poor family and how the boys help to cope with them.

background

Franz Schnyder implemented his own script with the film adaptation. The production cost two million francs and was funded by Swiss television and Schnyder's production company Neue Film AG . The material was shot from May to September 1967, the exterior shots were made in the vicinity of Burgdorf , including Rüegsau and in Wasen. A thirteen-part television series with half-hour episodes and a two-hour movie was created from the material, which premiered on October 3, 1968 in Bern and was to be Schnyder's last movie.

In the film adaptation Urs Hofmann, Jürg Dreier, Beat Schenk, Heinz Hiltbrunner, Ueli Hager and Urs Welsch played the six grief boys Mändu, Hänsu, Fritzli, Fredi, Peterli and Päuli. The child actors were later no longer active in the acting. Franz Matter and Linda Geiser played the Kummer couple. Margrit Rainer and Ruedi Walter appeared as Scheidegger's subtenants. Peter Markus played the mayor Hannes Lüthi, who demands interest on a mortgage note from Kummers. Ines Torelli , Ellen Widmann and Ettore Cella had other appearances . The film music was composed by Hans Moeckel and Robert Blum .

While the film attracted few viewers to theaters, the television series was a huge hit and was also shown in the United States . Many critics were negative about the film and series. In 2009, Luzia Helfer wrote in the Bund : “A series that focused on rural idyll and family cohesion did not fit in with the zeitgeist in the eyes of many critics. Because films like " Bonnie & Clyde " were en vogue, Gotthelf films were considered outdated. "

Reviews

«The film, shot in co-production with television, disappoints with black and white cabaret painting, psychological discrepancies and the actors' play, which is wooden and unnatural for a long time. The film triggered a storm of indignation among young people who were sensitized by the student movement and anger among filmmakers. "
