Hans Moeckel (born January 17, 1923 in St. Gallen ; † October 6, 1983 in Zurich ) was a Swiss composer and conductor .

Live and act

In 1939 he was the band leader of the Swing Pulis in St. Gallen , where he played the saxophone and clarinet himself . He gathered a few jazz enthusiasts from among his classmates at the canton school. Some of these also played in the St. Gallen Town Musicians and he had a lot of discussions with the music director Hans Heusser , who complained about the tone formation of the band's wind instruments. He was a member of the St. Gallen scouts department of the Corps Hospice, first as a member with the Vulgo Gimpel , and later as a composer for various entertainment events.

He completed his studies at the Conservatory in Zurich in the subjects of piano , composition and music theory . He then worked as the conductor of the orchestra at the St. Gallen City Theater . Because of a new engagement, he moved with his family to Basel in 1947 , where he initially worked as an arranger and deputy conductor in the Basel studio of the Swiss radio station DRS . In 1966 he succeeded Cédric Dumont as conductor of the entertainment orchestra of Schweizer Radio DRS (then known as Beromünster entertainment orchestra ). With the UOR he recorded many current hits by domestic and foreign composers, many of which were arranged by Herbert Rehbein. His attention to brass music was certainly one of the decisive factors in the founding of the radio wind orchestra in Basel, which he helped to initiate. He also conducted the police music of the city of Basel. Later he also conducted the Stadtmusik Zürich and the Feldmusik Jona from 1975 to 1983.

He became known to a wide audience as the composer of musicals , which from the late 1950s to the 1970s were very well known and popular not only in Zurich, where they were performed, not least thanks to the recordings that were recorded from them. He also composed music for chansons that Swiss actresses such as Stephanie Glaser and Ines Torelli played for their recordings. He also appeared regularly as an orchestra conductor in the entertainment programs of the Swiss television station DRS. Most recently he followed a call as a lecturer at the Conservatory in Zurich .

He was married to the singer Ella Moeckel; the jazz musician Thomas Moeckel is his son.
