action

Willy Guggenbühl is a correct husband. However, his punctuality really annoys his wife Margrit. A date with her childhood friend Roger Nyffeler does not change the situation. It is only when Margrit demands a divorce that Willy realizes the seriousness of the situation. His neighbor Edi Leuenberger explains the secret of his marriage to Yvonne, namely always leaving enough space for jealousy so that there is no boredom.

There is a meeting between Willy and Yvonne, at which they discuss their marital problems. The evening ends with a drinking bout. Yvonne disappears without a trace. Edi looks for her with Willy, who exposes himself to the suspicion of an affair through his behavior. The situation is reversed. While Edi gets angry and jealous, Margrit discovers a completely new side to her husband. Further entanglements ultimately lead to the couple's reconciliation.

background

The plot is based on the play Fair and Warmers by Avery Hopwood. German-language films were already in 1937 as The Model Husband with Heinz Rühmann and 1956 as The Model Husband: Can a man be so loyal? published with Harald Juhnke .

Actor Walter Roderer celebrated great successes on stage and on television in 1958 with the Schwank Der Mustergatte . Producer Erwin C. Dietrich presented him with his idea of bringing the material to the cinema with a Swiss-German version. Roderer took on the same role that he had already played on stage. He waived a fee and contented himself with a share of the income from the performances.

The shooting, which was equipped with a minimal budget, lasted from June to July 1959. The backdrops for the interior scenes were set up in the Salmen film studio in Schlieren , an inn with a club stage. For the exterior shots, they went to Villa Grieder in Zumikon .

The first performance took place on August 27, 1959 in the Zurich cinema Apollo . The film was a success and was shown in Zurich for fourteen weeks. It was not until July 21, 1961 that the dubbed film found its way into German cinemas under the title So ein Mustergatte . Legal problems had to be resolved beforehand with a Berlin production company that had already released its own version in 1956 with Can a man be sooo loyal ...

Reviews

"The Swiss remake serves the well-known comedy with colorless actors under a boring direction."
