IKON is an Australian gothic rock and post punk band.

history

Foundation and early years

Influenced by groups like Joy Division and the early New Order , Chris McCarter (guitars, keyboards, vocals) and Dino Molinaro (bass) began writing songs together during their high school years in Melbourne in 1988 . They learned their musical instruments by playing Joy Division pieces. Together with Michael Carrodus (vocals) they founded the band Death in the Dark . After Maurice Molella completed the band as drummer, the name of the band was renamed IKON in 1991. The first 7 "single" Why "was released in 1992 on the label Nile Records by Chris McCarter. In February 1993, Maurice Molella IKON and left the band decided henceforth to use a drum machine.

The 4-Track-7 " EP " Echoes of Silence "was released in July 1993 and the first album with the same title followed in January 1994. In addition to the income from the previous releases, increased live performances in November 1994 resulted in an increase A new album entitled “In the Shadow of the Angel” will be produced. In August 1995, the first retrospective collection “A Moment in Time” was released. Other publications were the 4-track-7 ”EP“ Condemnation ”and in In the form of an MCD, the Joy Division cover "In a Lonely Place".

The rest of the year was spent writing new material, which was released in March 1996 on the MCD "Life Without End" and in May 1996 on the album "Flowers for the Gathering". A tour in Australia followed and new material was to be written in the following year. Michael Carrodus left the band in 1997 and founded the "Chiron" project. Chris McCarter took over the singing alone and the songs were developed together with Dino Molinaro. In April 1998, the duo's first sign of life was released with the MCD “Subversion”. The album “This Quiet Earth” that followed in June was IKON's most successful album to date and reached number 6 in the German Alternative Charts. Dino Molinaro also left the band and at that time IKON was practically a solo project by Chris McCarter. In this constellation, the 8-track EP "Ghost in My Head" was released in December 1998, which topped all previous successes of the band and reached number three on the DAC. The compilation "Dawn of the Ikonoclast 1991-1997" included rare demo versions and remixes as well as cover versions of favorite pieces of the band.

New ways

In 1999, with Valerios on bass, Anthony Griffiths on guitar and David Burns on drums, IKON was again a band with a classic line-up that has not existed since Maurice Molella's departure. In November 1999 the MCD "Lifeless" was released in this formation. In the course of 2000 more songs were written and rehearsed for a new tour. In mid-2000, Dino Molinaro returned to bass for Valerios. The new songs were recorded in the studio from August to November. From this studio session the MCD "The Shallow Sea" was released. In February 2001 the album "On the Edge of Forever" followed. After the release, the band went on a world tour.

With the concerts in Europe, European fans now had the opportunity to experience IKON live. The M'era Luna Festival in Hildesheim in 2002 and the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig in 2003 , which was to be the destination of a tour again in 2005, left the greatest impressions on the band itself . In addition to Germany, France, Belgium, England, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Denmark were also the destinations of concerts in Europe. During their last trip to Europe in autumn 2009, in addition to Austria, Poland and Hungary were targets for the band for the first time. This tour is said to have been the last touring outside of Australia for the time being.

"Angels to Ashes" allowed a review of the band's history from 1997 to 2003. With "Psychic Vampire" followed in 2004 for the first time the publication of new material on an 8-track EP. The title track of the EP could also be found on the album "Destroying the World to Save It", released a year later. The album reached number 21 in the World DJ Native Charts. The album has already been recorded without Anthony Griffith and David Burns. Both focused on their project The Redresser . The drums were exchanged for a drum computer again. Clifford Ennis followed on guitar, with whom Chris McCarter runs the Jerusalem Syndrome project . Clifford Ennis is also significantly involved in the "Subterfuge" project and founded the band "Razorfade" after leaving IKON.

Another four years should pass before the next regular long player. The time was bridged with a singles compilation called "The Burden of History" and an accompanying extensive tour. The EPs "League of Nations" (2007) and "Amongst the Runes" (2008) also shortened the time to the next album. During this time IKON was supported by Anthony Cornish from the band "The Revenant".

With their last album "Love, Hate and Sorrow" from 2009, IKON returned to their first label Apollyon (label) . The band's first DVD was released in 2010 with “A Line on a Dark Day”.

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, IKON released their first two albums in a revised form and used this occasion for concerts in the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Germany. Returning to the band were Clifford Ennis on guitar and David Burns on drums. The highlight was again the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig. As a resurrected quartet, IKON announced a new studio album for 2012. In addition, the other earlier albums are to be revised and re-released.

style

Influences from Joy Division , New Order , Death in June , Kraftwerk , Killing Joke and Icehouse were woven into the band's own sound, which made IKON a special place in the Australian music scene. Michael Carrodus' voice, based on Ian Curtis , did the rest to underline the proximity to Joy Division.

Collaborations

Chris McCarter, Dino Molinaro and Michael Carrodus released the album "Rites of Burial" in 1997 as the Crimes of Passion . The pieces are more experimental and instrument-heavy with haunting, threatening spoken vocals. With loops and noise elements, this project is more likely to be assigned to industrial and essentially stands on its own and not as an appendage to IKON. Initially intended as a project with other musicians and artists, the album was created and released at a time when IKON was actually a solo project by Chris McCarter. However, there were no further activities within the scope of the original concept.

In the course of the band's history, there have been repeated close collaborations with other bands. In 2002 a split single version of "Afterlife" was released on vinyl together with the band The Redresser . In 2005, a split single was released on vinyl with the German gothic rock formation The House of Usher .

Chris McCarter also works with Clifford Ennis on the Jerusalem Syndrome Project . For the 2000 project The Seventh Dawn , he supported his sister Susan McCarter.

Others

IKON are a member of the Crash Frequency Collective , an association of Australian future pop / electro / alternative bands who support each other in becoming known worldwide. In Australia, IKON are now referred to as " AC / DC des Gothic " because of their long-lasting international success .
