Ilan Chet ( Hebrew אילן חת) (Born April 12, 1939 in Haifa ) is an Israeli microbiologist and professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , Faculty of Agricultural Science in Rechovot . He became Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean in 2010 with responsibility for higher education and research.

Life

Chet was born in Haifa. He completed his B.Sc. and in 1964 his M.Sc. and obtained his Ph.D. in microbiology from the Faculty of Agriculture, Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Chet is married and has five children.

research

Chet is considered to be a pioneer in the field of biological control of plant pathogens that cause large crop losses. His research concerns the biological control of plant diseases with environmentally friendly microorganisms . Chet has published more than 380 articles in international scientific journals, edited five specialist books, and holds 38 patents.

He has been a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 1998 and in 2000 he was nominated as President of the Weizmann Institute for Sciences , which he headed from 2001 to 2006. In 2014 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea .
