Ilex cassine is a plant from the genus of holly ( Ilex ) within the family of holly plants (Aquifoliaceae). It is distributed on the southeast coast of North America from Virginia to southeast Texas and the Mexican state of Veracruz and on the Caribbean islands of the Bahamas , Cuba and northeastern Puerto Rico .

Vegetative characteristics

Ilex cassine grows as an evergreen , large shrub or small tree that reaches heights of 10 to 13 meters.

The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf blade is 6 to 15 inches long and 2 to 4 inches wide, shiny dark green, with entire margins or with small thorns near the upper end.

Generative characteristics

Ilex cassine is dioeciously segregated ( diocesan ), d. that is, male and female specimens exist. The unisexual flowers are white and four-fold. The four petals form a four-lobed corolla. The red stone fruit when ripe has a diameter of 5 to 6 millimeters and contains four seeds .

Only the female plant specimens can bear fruit, and only if a male grows within reach of bees as a pollinator .

Systematics and distribution

The first publication of Ilex cassine was made by Carl Linnaeus .

About three varieties are described:

  • Ilex cassine L. var. Cassine : It occurs in the USA and on the Caribbean islands.
  • Ilex cassine var. Angustifolia Aiton: It occurs in the United States of America.
  • Ilex cassine var. Mexicana (Turcz.) Loes .: It occurs in Mexico.

Ilex cassine grows in warmer climates as an ornamental plant that grows up to 10 meters high because of the bright red berries that contrast nicely with the glossy dark green foliage . The original distribution area was on the coast, but was expanded far inland through plantings.

Common names

English-language common names are dahoon holly and cassena. The common name cassena comes from the Timucua language for the related Ilex vomitoria .
