Ilie Savu (born January 9, 1920 in Cornățelu , † November 16, 2010 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian football player and coach . The goalkeeper won the Romanian championship twice with Venus Bucharest . As a coach, he won the Romanian Cup with Steaua Bucharest in the seasons 1965/66 and 1966/67 .
Player career
The career of Savu began in 1934 at the age of 14 years when Prahova Ploiesti in the second Romanian league, the Divizia B . In early 1937 he moved to the top club Venus Bucharest , with whom he was able to complete the seasons 1938/39 and 1939/40 by winning the Romanian championship. After the game operation of the Divizia A was stopped due to the Second World War , he joined UF Hunedoara in early 1943 .
In the summer of 1947, Savu moved to the newly founded army club ASA Bucharest (later CSCA Bucharest ). With CSCA he won the Romanian Cup twice in 1949 and 1950 , but was not used in the finals. After the 1950 season, he ended his active career.
Coaching career
After the end of his active career, Savu worked as a football coach . In the summer of 1954, he was the first coach of his former club CCA Bucharest as the successor to Francisc Ronnay . He led his team in the 1954 season to runner-up behind Flamura Roşie UT Arad . In the middle of the 1955 season he had to vacate his place for Ștefan Dobay , whom he assisted in the 1956 season in winning the Romanian championship. In the following season, Savu was again responsible as head coach for CCA and ended the season 1957/58 with the runner-up on points behind Petrolul Ploiesti .
In the season 1960/61 Savu coached the first team of his previous team Corvinul Hunedoara in Divizia A, but the team had to relegate bottom of the table. In the summer of 1964 Savu was the third time coach of Steaua Bucharest. In the 1965/66 season he fought with his team against relegation, but won the Romanian Cup in the same year . This success was repeated a year later . Then Savu was replaced by Ștefan Kovács .
In the 1976/77 season and in the first half of the 1978/79 season , Savu looked after Corvinul Hunedoara again before he was replaced by Mircea Lucescu .
