Ilse Losa (born March  20, 1913 in Buer near Melle ; †  January 6, 2006 in Porto ; née Ilse Lieblich ) was a German - Portuguese writer and translator.

Life

The German Jew Ilse Losa grew up in Melle- Buer. In 1934 Losa got into trouble because of a letter in which she described Adolf Hitler as a criminal and which was intercepted by the Gestapo . After the interrogation in Berlin, she left the Gestapo headquarters there, immediately got on a train and fled from Germany to Porto in northern Portugal, where her older brother Ernst, who took in Ilse, was already living.

She married the architect Arménio Losa and became a Portuguese citizen in 1935 .

After learning Portuguese, she started writing here too. First of all, there were little journalistic work, articles, columns and stories that dealt with everyday life in Porto. In her first works she processed the bitter experiences from Nazi Germany, the loss of home and the peculiarities of exile. "In 1949 her first book" O Mundo em que vivi "was published, which was inspired by autobiography and describes life in Germany before emigrating to Portugal." In it, Losa processes her own experiences in the description of her protagonist Rose Frankfurter from Berlin. "The book, in German The world I lived in , is now part of the national reading plan for Portuguese school reading".

Losa also worked as a publishing editor and translated works a. a. by Bertolt Brecht and Thomas Mann and the diary of Anne Frank in Portuguese. She also wrote for newspapers and translated Portuguese books into German. Conversely, she translated important Portuguese novelists such as Manuel da Fonseca and his book “Saat des Windes”, which was banned by the Salazar regime, into German.

"Ilse Lieblich Losa has made a name for herself in transnational cultural exchange as a firmly anchored and yet somewhere between two poles mediator between two linguistic worlds." She and her work were loved in Portugal, and on the occasion of her 100th birthday in March 2016, she was honored there as a "bright spot of Portuguese culture".
