In the third division football season 2014/15 , the three neighboring traditional clubs Arminia Bielefeld and Preußen Münster from North Rhine-Westphalia and VfL Osnabrück from Lower Saxony met each other. Due to the spatial proximity, there is a rivalry between the supporters of the three clubs. The Hamburg filmmaker Milan Skrobanek described the course of the season from the respective perspectives of the club. The project was financed by crowdfunding , which raised around 27,000 euros . Originally, Skrobanek wanted to make a film about the Bundesliga , but only received rejections from there.

The three clubs shown in the film were also initially skeptical of the project. In contrast, the German Football Association was enthusiastic about Skrobanek's project. In Osnabrück , Skrobanek concentrated on the sport and put the then coach Maik Walpurgis and the player Nicolas Feldhahn in focus. In Bielefeld standing office and spokesman Tim Santen at the center, while in Munster was taken care of the fans and their projects.

On November 10, 2015, the film celebrated its cinema premiere in Osnabrück. The premieres in Bielefeld and Münster followed on the following two days. On December 1, 2015, Im Derby-Dreieck was released on DVD . In addition to the 83-minute main film, the DVD contains a detailed audio commentary, many extras and other scenes that do not appear in the film. The German Football Museum in Dortmund began showing football films in the newly built cinema in May 2016. The first film in this series was shown in Derby Triangle .

At the 11mm film festival in 2016, Im Derby-Dreieck in Berlin was voted the second best football film. A total of 70 films were available. Julian Koch from the online magazine Liga3-Online contains the film “Passion, emotions and goose bumps. The film comes closer to the inner workings of the 3rd division than anyone has before and is therefore a must for every third division fan ”. For the German Football Association "the material is far from being ironed to a high gloss and conveys a robust image of the 3rd league".
