action

The three Hensman brothers Robin, John and Harold live with their aunt Ellen in Dower House, an old widow's residence of an aristocratic family in the village of Cherry Walden . The boys' father - 12, 14 and 16 years old - works in one of the many British overseas colonies. The boys are not happy; her aunt Ellen is strict and shows little understanding for her. Towards the end of the Easter break, tribulation pervades them. The brothers do not like the prospect of having to return to school in Banchester. Instead, they plan to go to the Brendon Chase Forest 15 miles away . The eldest of the Hensman brothers, Robin, suggests that they live there according to their own rules. Enthusiastic about the idea, John and Robin first set out at night and in fog and go into hiding in the Brendon Chase. They later catch up with their younger brother Harold, who had to stay in Dower House due to an illness.

In the 11000 acre forest (approx. 2750 hectares ) they find shelter in an ancient, hollow oak. The brothers plunge into their life as outlaws , as they call themselves, full of enthusiasm . To survive in the forest, they have to hunt , fish , collect berries, set traps and store supplies. Gradually they get to know the laws of the forest and find their way around better and better. They make clothes from slain animals that they could shoot with the help of a stolen shotgun, and they develop into strong and healthy young forest people. Now and then they dare to venture into the nearby town, which for Harold almost ends with the capture. They must be constantly on the lookout for the police officer Sergeant Bunting, who is feverishly looking for the three escaped. The British tabloids also suspect a big story and, driven by lust for sensation, cling to every trace of the boys. In the end there is even a bounty of 50 pounds on the brothers.

Of course, Aunt Ellen is also very worried, but all efforts are in vain, the Hensman brothers can repeatedly shake off their pursuers and live undisturbed in Brendon Chase for months. The old charcoal burner Smokie Joe, who lives as a hermit on the edge of the forest in a small hut, becomes her friend. When Smokie Joe has a serious accident and is even in danger of death, the game is over for the boys. In order to save their friend, they have to venture out of their hiding place. Meanwhile, Mister Hensman, alerted by Aunt Ellen, is back in the country. Smokie Joe can save her, but her life in the forest is over.
