Whenever night falls is a German film drama from 1961 with the very young Hannelore Elsner in one of her first film roles.

action

The easy-going Bobby Elkins, son of a famous dermatologist and his wife Gloria, is a young man who is very carefree with his sex drive. He hangs around bars and pubs every evening and has sexual contact with several women. His life should always get the latest kick, a life in the fast lane. When he caught syphilis one night from a prostitute , he didn't take that too hard either. Instead of going to his father or at least to another doctor with this dangerous illness, he takes the illness lightly and continues to go to bed with other girls whenever night falls, as the film title suggests.

In his irresponsibility, he promptly infects the two young women Elke Gerdes, a young electrician, and Karin Klausen, a helpful laboratory assistant. As a result, all three get into serious conflicts with their parents' homes. Elke is forcibly admitted to a clinic and commits suicide a little later. It wasn't until late that Bobby realized the irresponsibility of what he was doing and trusted the young doctor Dr. Goetz. After this encounter, Bobby has to pay heavily for his reckless behavior, as the film morality of the late Adenauer years wants: He drives his car to his death.

Production notes

Whenever night falls , it had its mass start on December 1, 1961 in several German cities. The B-film opened in Austria on August 10, 1962.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: "The not new topic of the economic boom jeunesse dorée, but with well-seen details."

"A miserable film, amateurish in design."

"The drama about syphilis, also referred to as 'slaves of vice', aims at the hypocritical demonstration of the consequences of a lifestyle called 'immoral'."
