Imre Friváldszky von Friváld , German Em (m) erich Frivaldszky , Friwaldsky von Friwald (born February 6, 1799 in Bacskó , Semplin county ; † April 3, 1870 in Jobbágyi ) was a Hungarian , k. k. Austrian botanist , entomologist and doctor . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Friv. ".

Live and act

He was director of the Hungarian National Museum from 1822 to 1851 . Von Friváld described previously unknown or unclassified plants from the Balkans and Turkey . As an entomologist, he studied butterflies and beetles . He is a close relative of the zoologist János Frivaldszky (1822–1895).

Between 1835 and 1845 he organized and financed four expeditions to what is now Bulgaria (then European Turkey), but did not travel to Turkey until 1846. His assistants (Andras Füle, Anton Rochel and others) brought botanical and zoological collections to Hungary. In 1835 he described the Gesneria family Haberlea rhodopensis found in the Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria for the first time.

Honors

According to him, the plant genera Frivaldia Endl. and Frivaldzkia Rchb. named from the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
