Etymology and history

Siepen is a regional name for a small Kerbtal.

In the 19th century the farm In den Siepen belonged to the Uellendahler Rotte of the Lord Mayor's House of Elberfeld . At that time, the place was right on the border between the mayor's office and the Dönberg farming community in the Hardenberg town hall , which was renamed Neviges in 1935 .

The place is marked as Siepen on the topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 and unmarked on the Prussian first survey from 1843. On the Wuppertal city map from 1930, the place bears the name In den Siepen .

According to the statistics and topography of the Düsseldorf administrative district in 1832 , the place, which was categorized as an arable estate and a craftsman's apartment, was called im Siepen and at that time had two residential buildings and four agricultural buildings. At that time, 27 residents lived in the village, six of them Catholic and 21 Protestant. No residents are named for 1815/16. Address books from 1850 to 1858 use the spelling Im Siepen , from 1864 in den Siepen .

To the north of In den Siepen ran a coal route from Sprockhövel to Elberfeld (here today's Westfalenweg ), on which coal was transported from the mines in the southern Ruhr area to the factories in Wuppertal in the late 18th century and in the first half of the 19th century , which was the industrial heart of the region at that time.

In the 1960s, the original residential area was removed and the high-rise housing estate was built on the courtyard area in the area of today's Hans-Böckler-Straße , Theodor-Heuss-Straße and In den Siepen .
