G Data Antivirus is an antivirus program from the German IT company G Data CyberDefense . It was primarily developed for computers with Windows and Mac OS and is intended to protect users from malware .
Functions
G Data Antivirus has active hybrid protection , an autostart manager, BankGuard technology, detection and removal of viruses , Trojans , worms , spyware , adware , keyloggers , auto-dialers , privacy protection, phishing protection, search advisor, remote administration as well as detection and removal of Rootkits . G Data Antivirus also receives automatic real-time updates.
Active hybrid protection
Active hybrid protection comes about through the use of a second, smaller engine for virus scanning, which G Data uses the marketing term CloseGap technology. Bitdefender is used as the second virus scan engine . The so-called CloseGap technology has the components of proactive protection as well as signature-based detection, whereby it works with a smaller virus database as the main engine for virus scanning. According to G Data, the advantage over the competition should consist of lower resource consumption of the antivirus software, which could not be confirmed in the test by the computer magazine c't .
G Data BankGuard
G Data BankGuard is designed to protect the browser from banking Trojans . Among other things, these use security gaps in the encryption in the browser which, according to G Data, should be closed by BankGuard.
AutostartManager
According to G Data, the AutostartManager from G Data ensures a faster boot process. As of version 2014, G Data Antivirus thus includes components of a tuning software. This allows applications to be started without delays or with a specified delay in minutes. It is also possible not to start the application at all.
More functions
In addition, G Data Antivirus automatically scans instant messengers , e-mails and connected USB storage media. The software also includes functions for protection in social networks and free program upgrades within the paid subscription. The manufacturer also offers 24-hour technical support. G Data currently offers its antivirus program in the form of annual, two-year and three-year subscriptions.
Test results
In March 2020, AV-Comparitives determined a detection rate (total detection) of 100% for G Data Internet Security, whereby there were also a few false positives. G Data received the “Advanced +” seal, together with five other programs, the highest award of four possible. A total of 17 known antivirus programs were tested. In a further test by AV-Comparitives in April 2020, the effect of virus scanners on the system performance of computers was tested. Here, G Data Internet Security took the penultimate of 16 places.
In Chip Online's virus scanner test 2020, G Data Antivirus performed worst of 17 programs tested. The protective effect was particularly criticized. However, the few false positives stood out positively
In the test in the 11/2013 issue of the computer magazine c't , it is noted that G Data Antivirus 2014 is the first G Data program with its own scan engine instead of two from external manufacturers, most recently Avast Antivirus and Bitdefender . The computer magazine c't criticizes the fact that “the current G-Data generation still slows down computers much more” than the competitors of Kaspersky and Symantec (meaning Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Norton AntiVirus ).
restrictions
G Data Antivirus is missing some functions, a firewall filter , protection of minors and the data shredder that G Data Internet Security has. Like many of its competitors, G Data Antivirus is incompatible with other anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
Macintosh versions
The Macintosh version of G Data Antivirus is based on the corresponding product from Bitdefender and runs on all Mac OS X Sierra (or higher) Macs . It also has a Mac- like interface, which Mac users should be familiar with. G Data Antivirus for Mac offers phishing protection and network protection.
