The Indian pond rose is a perennial aquatic plant with a rhizome that is 3 to 8 cm in diameter and grows in water depths of more than 30 centimeters. The floating leaf blade is broadly ovate, measures 10 to 40 (45) × 7 to 30 centimeters and as long as wide.

The hermaphrodite, radial symmetry flowers have a diameter of 5 to 12 centimeters. There are usually nine (six to twelve) sepals available. There are many spirally arranged petals. The scar disc has eight to 26 rays (up to 36 rays). The flowering period extends from May to August.

The green to yellow fruit is cylindrical to ovoid, strongly ribbed, usually 4 to 6 cm long (rarely up to 9 cm) and a diameter of 3.5 to 6 cm. The seeds are 3.5 to 5 mm in size.
