Patchouli ( Pogostemon cablin ) is a plant from the family of the mint (Lamiaceae). It is known for the patchouli oil obtained from it .

description

They are perennial, herbaceous plants or subshrubs that grow upright and reach heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The stems are hairy tomentose, the leaf stalks extending from them reach a length of 1 to 6 centimeters. The leaf blade is circular to broadly ovate, 2 to 10, 5 centimeters long and 1 to 8.5 centimeters wide, tomentose on both sides and dark green. The edges are incised irregularly, with five side ribs extending from the central rib on each side.

The annual inflorescences are 4 to 6.5 inches long and 1.5 to 1.8 inches in diameter, densely tomentose. The numerous flowers are in pseudo whorls , i.e. in rings at regular intervals. The flowers stems are from 0.5 to 2 centimeters long, supporting and bracts are linear-lanceolate, dense felt-like hairy and approximately as long as the cup. The sepals are fused tubular, have a length between 7 and 9 millimeters and are finely hairy inside. The purple petals are fused, around 1 centimeter long and the corolla lobes are shaggy on the outside. The stamens are hairy.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32 or 64.

This species is native to India , Sri Lanka , Taiwan , the Philippines , Indonesia , southern China, and Malaysia .

use

Indian patchouli, like its relative, Javanese patchouli , is cultivated in order to obtain patchouli oil as a raw material for the perfume industry from the leaves by steam distillation . It is also used medicinally.
