The Individual Network Berlin e. V. (IN-Berlin) is a non-commercial internet service provider for private individuals, associations and non-commercial groups. With its 30-year history, IN-Berlin is one of the oldest providers in Berlin . IN-Berlin participants can become members of the sponsoring association and actively participate in the democratic design and organization processes of the association and the operation of the technology.

IN-Berlin, like the other associations that later merged to form the Individual Network (IN), was one of the first institutions in Germany to provide affordable access to the Internet for private individuals and thus contributed significantly to its spread.

1989
1990
  • In the middle of the year, Berlin nodes sign a contract with UniDo ( EUnet ); the FU is supplied from there via UUCP.
  • IN-Berlin founding meeting in Café Hardenberg; about 30 computers take part in IN-Berlin.
  • The application for the domain berlin.de is rejected by the responsible DE-NIC . The in-berlin.de chosen instead was not objected to.
  • The Free University of Berlin applies for IP to EUnet.

Club rooms

The IN-Berlin operates together with the Berlin Linux User Group e. V. (BeLUG) Club rooms in Lehrter Straße 53. A large number of groups from the free software , free content and Linux / Unix environment meet in the premises . B. also the Berlin Wikipedians. The IN-Berlin active meeting takes place there every week. The electronics workshop eLAB in the club rooms is open twice a week.

Technology / services

The association operates servers in several data centers and its club rooms. The IN-Berlin network is connected to the Internet via various sponsors from IP-Transit on the self-operated Community-IX and local peerings on BCIX , ECIX , DE-CIX and NL-IX. There is a possibility of access via DSL , but its importance is decreasing. There is also the option of dialing in via VPN . The participants of IN-Berlin receive static IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, hosting , virtual servers and server housing on request .

Politics / engagement

IN-Berlin rejects any efforts aimed at the curtailment of civil rights and the restriction of informational self-determination. For this reason, the association supports groups such as B. the Chaos Computer Club , the working group for data retention or the Electronic Frontier Foundation . Due to its founding history, the dismantling of access barriers and the promotion of free infrastructures has always been a central motivation; He also works with the Freifunk initiative in Berlin. The sponsorship of the transmediale festival, which is hosted by IN-Berlin, deserves special mention for its commitment in the cultural sector .
