Ines De Nil (* 1947 in Gladbeck ) is a German photographer , painter and documentary filmmaker .

Life

At the age of 16 she did an apprenticeship as a photographer, then trained as a graphic draftsman, and later studied at the Folkwang School and the University of Essen .

She has been working as a freelance photographer, graphic artist and painter since 1978. In 1982 the company moved from the Ruhr area to Berlin . The forms of expression neo-baroque and expressionism dominate her painting . The representations are extensive and colorful and show, for example, ice skaters on thin ice, dancing men, sleeping women in the subway. Ines De Nil ended her painting phase in 2005 with the exhibition Gelsenkirchen Baroque - Paintings from 20 Years .

As a photographer, she focused on portraits from the start. Two photo series show the grandparents in the small town of Temse in Belgium. You can see them in their everyday surroundings, doing kitchen work, on the stairs to the stable, in front of the dovecote. Inspired by Pieter Bruegel's peasant pictures, De Nil's admiration for the life of his grandparents is evident.

The first recordings for the photo book Zarte Dinge began in 1989. Ines De Nil was asked by her neighbor Ikarus to photograph him for an exhibition on AIDS relief . His conception of loving one's own body, even if it did not correspond to the usual ideas, influenced her in her further representations. At a time when homosexuality and AIDS were taboo, he was the first gay man to deal aggressively with his illness. He refused to put make-up on his kaposi stains and printed the T4 helper cell values on his T-shirt. How disturbing these photographs can be became clear at an exhibition on AIDS at FNAC in Paris in 1995 when the portrait photo of Icarus was shown, but not the nude photo. The nude photo would be degrading, they said.

The Ikarus photographs were followed by serious and funny portraits of protagonists of all ages, outside of all norms without idealization. The old woman shows her skin, which looks like tree bark, a little boy with an operation scar plays with his vampire mother, a sensual pregnant woman rests on her bed. They themselves decided how they wanted to look in the black and white pictures and gave their comments in brief texts. All of the photos in the photo book Zarte Dinge show the individual beauty of the models. The mostly gentle photographs and texts are seen by some viewers as unbearable.

While working at SO36 in Kreuzberg from 1994 to 2002, photo series and documentary films were made.

The photo installation Rolliges Fleisch in the Akademie der Künste Berlin is closely connected to the freaky, gay-lesbian, crippling actions of SO36 in Oranienstrasse and the gay- lesbian freakshow in the Waldschlösschen near Göttingen . Lush, decorative portrait photographs alternate with recordings of the stage shows and the freak demonstration. In the documentary No Day Without Love , De Nil lets these freaks talk about their lives and love.

The docu-soap In the heart of O-Strasse , De Nil collects stories from the SO36 collective, the legendary club in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Real events are recorded or subsequently staged in front of the camera with some SO employees. Punk concert excerpts and scenes from the Mumia Abu Jamal Solidarity Concert document the 90s politically and culturally. The transformation of the craftsmen and the counter force under the pressure of wigs is just as important to the filmmaker as the love of Turkish trannies for folk headscarves. The most impressive shots show the street festival and the stage on Moritzplatz , with Turkish belly dancers, lesbian and gay bands and thousands of citizens of all nations who stand and dance close together up to Oranienplatz .

The last days of the Reichsbahn repair shop in Berlin-Tempelhof were recorded with the photographs of Ines De Nil . Years later, in memory of these pictures, a railway employee suggested taking up the topic. The documentary Who Was with the Reichsbahn Was a Red Dog by Ines De Nil and Detlef Fluch describes the unusual work situation in reports from the former workers.

In 2015–2016, Detlef Fluch and Ines De Nil shot the documentary Grenzgängerballade - the journey of Stefan Dimitrov and his Gadulka . The idea for the film about the life of an illegal came up during neighborly contacts with the Bulgarian musician Daskalos, impressed by his stories and ballads.
