Ingebrigt Bjørø

Ingebrigt Bjørø (born June 17, 1879 in Austevoll , Hordaland ; † February 8, 1944 ) was a Norwegian politician and founder and first chairman of Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF).

Life

After attending school in 1902, Bjørø became a self-employed plumber in Os and later became involved in local politics as a member of the local council . In addition, he was temporarily chairman of the board of the Sparbank von Os and also held offices in church organizations such as the Inner Mission and the Evangelisk Orientmisjon .

In response to the increasing secularization tendencies of the 1920s and 30s, he founded the Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF) in 1933. The reason for founding the party was the failed attempt to nominate Nils Lavik as a candidate for the liberal Venstre party in the constituency of Hordaland . Bjørø then called for the founding of the KrF on September 4, 1933 in Bergen . In the parliamentary elections on October 16, 1933 , Nils Lavik received over 10,000 votes and became the first Storting member of his party.

After the party was founded, Bjørø became the first chairman of the KrF and handed over this office to Lavik in 1938.
