Nils Lavik

Nils Andresson Lavik (born January 8, 1884 in Hosanger , Hordaland ; † July 14, 1966 ) was a Norwegian politician of the Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF), who was, among other things, more than twenty years member of the Storting and thirteen years chairman of the KrF.

Life

Professional activities and church engagement

Lavik, son of a farmer , attended after the youth school ( Ungdomsskule ) in Framnes from 1902 to 1903 the adult education center ( Folkehøgskule ) in Voss . He then worked as a farmhand on various farms in Eksingedalen between 1904 and 1914 . In addition, he was active as an editor for the youth newspaper of the Bible School in Bergen and from 1908 to 1919 was also a representative of the Association for the Inner Mission in Vestlandet ( Det Vestlandske Indremisjonsforbund ) during the winter months .

In 1915 he himself became a teacher at the Bible School in Bergen and from 1920 to 1922 also a teacher in Eksingedalen. He was also chairman of the board of the youth school in Nordhordland between 1919 and 1926 . Lavik was also a board member of Det Vestlandske Indremisjonsforbund between 1920 and 1955 and secretary of the board from 1922 to 1927. Between 1923 and 1930 and again from 1932 to 1941 Lavik was editor of the newspaper Sambaandet and from 1926 to 1933 rector of the Bergen Bible School. In 1932 he became chairman of Det Vestlandske Indremisjonsforbund and held this office until 1950.

Member of the Storting and chairman of the KrF

Lavik originally belonged to the liberal Venstre , and was an alternate member of the Storting from 1931 to 1933. When the attempt failed, Lavik as candidates of the liberal Venstre party in the constituency Hordaland set up, called Ingebrigt Bjørø in mountains on the 4 September 1933 establishing the KrF. In the parliamentary elections on October 16, 1933 , Nils Lavik received over 10,000 votes and was the first member of his party in Storting. There he represented the constituency of Hordaland for twenty years until 1953 .

In 1938 Lavik succeeded Ingebrigt Bjørø as chairman of Kristelig Folkeparti, and retained this position until he was replaced by Erling Wikborg in 1951. Between December 1945 and January 1954 he was also chairman of the KrF faction in Storting.

During his long membership in parliament, he was also deputy chairman of the Committee on Churches and Schools ( Kirke og skolekomité ) from December 1945 to January 1950 . Furthermore, he was temporarily a member of the Storting Committees for elections ( Valgkomité ) and for foreign and constitutional affairs ( Utenriks- og Konstitusjonskomité ). He was also a member of the delegation to the Nordic Council for some time .

After retiring from the Storting, he was in 1953 member of the executive branch of the Norwegian central bank , the Norges Bank , in Bergen and remained in this position until 1956. He also served from 1955 to 1961 CEO of the company Frekhaug Metallstøperi A / S .

In 1964 Lavik was honored with the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Saint Olav for his political and social services .
