Erling Wikborg (born November 5, 1894 in Drammen , Buskerud ; † April 6, 1992 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian politician of the Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF), who was Norway's foreign minister for a short time between August and September 1963 .

Life

Lawyer and activities in the private sector

Wikborg, the son of an average inspector , began studying law after attending school in 1913 , which he graduated as Cand. jur. completed. He then worked as a lawyer and was also licensed as a lawyer in 1922 for the Norges Høyesterett , the highest court in Norway. After completing postgraduate studies in international law and maritime law at universities in France and Great Britain between 1922 and 1923 , he founded his own law firm in Oslo after his return to Norway in 1923 . In addition to his work as a lawyer, he was also an examiner for state law examinations from 1937 to 1940 .

At the end of the 1930s he also took on several functions in the private sector and was a member of the board of directors of A / S Solplassen from 1938 to 1990 and of the insurer A / S Vega from 1938 to 1976 and of the board of directors of his family-owned insurance and broker company Wikborg between 1940 and 1984 Sons A / S .

Chairman of the KrF and Foreign Minister

After the end of the German occupation, he was elected as a candidate for the Kristelig Folkeparti in December 1945 for the first time as a member of the Storting and initially represented the Akershus constituency there until January 1949 . At the same time he was deputy chairman of the KrF faction during this time .

After he was a member of the program committee of his party in 1947, he succeeded Nils Lavik as chairman of the Kristelig Folkeparti in 1951 , and held the office of party chairman until he was replaced by Einar Hareide in 1955. During this time he was also a member of the KrF working committee.

In addition, from 1953 to 1957 Wikborg was also CEO of A / S Svendsensgate 3 og 5 and A / S Shellgården Boligselskap .

Between January 1954 and September 1961 he was again elected a member of the Storting for the Oslo constituency and at the same time chairman of the Kristelig Folkeparti faction.

During his membership in parliament he was at times a delegate or deputy delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations , a representative to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and to the Nordic Council . In addition, he was a member of the Storting's social committee ( Stortingets Sosialkomité ), the Foreign Affairs and Constitutional Committee ( Stortingets Utenriks- og konstitusjonskomité ) and the electoral committee ( Stortingets Valgkomité ). He was also a member of the State Atomic Energy Council between 1955 and 1962.

On August 28, 1963 he was appointed by Prime Minister John Lyng as foreign minister in his bourgeois minority government. He belonged to this Lyng government, which was formed from Høyre , Kristeligt Folkeparti, Senterpartiet and Venstre , until it was replaced by the fourth government of Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen from the Arbeiderpartiet just one month later on September 25, 1963.

Wikborg was also a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in 1965 and again between 1967 and 1970 .
