Ingela Bruner (born August 12, 1952 in Kristianstad , Sweden, † April 8, 2014 in Vienna ) was a Swedish-Austrian scientist. As the rector of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna , she was the first woman rector at a state Austrian university .

Life

Ingela Bruner was born in Sweden to a Swedish woman and a Canadian UN official. Through her father's work, she grew up in different countries (Canada, Syria, Lebanon, Austria, France). She studied at the University of Toronto and the Technical University of Vienna , where she was the first woman in Austria to receive a doctorate in mechanical engineering in 1979. She then worked at the Vienna University of Technology as an assistant at the Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering. In 1980 she moved to OMV , where she was responsible for corporate planning in the field of energy policy and as an assistant to CEO Richard Schenz , as well as for corporate development and strategic controlling. From 1995 she was Vice President at the Danube University in Krems, from 1996 she was solely responsible for it. From 1999 to 2002 Bruner worked again for OMV as head of research.

In 1996 she was granted Austrian citizenship by the Austrian federal government for her “extraordinary achievements” .

From September 2007 to January 2009 she was the first woman to hold the post of rector of a state Austrian university at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna . Due to growing criticism (Ingela Bruner described this as: "Increasing bullying and massive attempts to intimidate me"), she resigned from this position prematurely in agreement with the University Council of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in order to avoid impeachment by the Senate of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. One day after Bruner had sent her resignation to the university council, the latter unanimously decided (with the votes of all professors, university employees and students represented on the committee) a motion to initiate an impeachment. On January 20, 2009, the University Council accepted her resignation and entrusted one of her deputies with the management of the university.

From 2010 to 2013 Ingela Bruner was President of the Austrian-Swedish Society (ÖSG) based in Vienna .
