The InnoGames GmbH is a game development studio and operators of browser-based and mobile online games based in Hamburg . The company currently has seven games in live operation and several are in development.

history

The founders Eike and Hendrik Klindworth and Michael Zillmer started developing the browser game Die Stämme in 2003 , which reached around 50,000 users by autumn 2005 and today has 59 million registered players worldwide. In 2005, the founders decided to produce browser games full-time. On January 1, 2007, InnoGames GmbH was founded. The number of users of The Tribes continued to grow and new employees were hired. In 2008 the company released The West , the second game of their own development. In the same year InnoGames moved into new business premises in Hamburg-Harburg and took on additional employees. In 2009 the company moved within Harburg to enlarge the office space. In September 2009 the new strategy browser game Grepolis started a beta test with a limited number of users. The game was released on December 8, 2009. Since September and October 2013, Grepolis has also been playable as an app for iOS and Android devices.

On April 1st, 2010 InnoGames founded InnoGames Korea, a subsidiary especially for the Asian market. On May 21, 2010, the investor Fidelity Growth Partners Europe (FGPE) was announced. On February 1, 2011, InnoGames launched a central game portal at innogames.com for its around 60 million registered users at the time. The company also announced on the following day that it would be advised by former EA manager Gerhard Florin as chairman . He most recently worked at Electronic Arts as Executive Vice President of Publishing. InnoGames cooperates with ProSiebenSat.1, among others, to market the games .

In April 2012 InnoGames published the strategy game Forge of Empires . The game includes a journey through time that begins in the Stone Age and leads the player through the ages of human history. Forge of Empires was awarded the German Computer Game Prize as the best browser game in 2013 . Since June 5, 2014, the game can also be played as an app on the iPad. The iPhone version followed on September 27, 2014, and the Android version on March 25, 2015.

On July 17, 2013 InnoGames announced that it would stop work on the free seafaring simulation Kartuga and at the same time close the development studio Ticking Bomb Games. The reasons given were quality defects, a lack of player numbers and a different orientation of the publisher. According to a report by Golem.de , in addition to Remanum from Travian Games, it was another elaborately produced prestige title that could not find a sufficient user base, and thus exemplifies a market for browser games that was in upheaval in 2012/13.

In March 2014, InnoGames moved into new offices in Hamburg's City Süd, while the InnoHub, a start-up center, was launched.

InnoGames opened a new studio in Düsseldorf in January 2015, which has since been devoted to the development of mobile games. In March 2016, the team and the three founders of the Oberhausen developer Funatics Software GmbH added to the Düsseldorf studio. On May 28, 2015 InnoGames published the fantasy building game Elvenar for the browser.

In October 2016, the Swedish media company Modern Times Group (MTG) acquired a total of 35% from the InnoGames founders and the former investor Eight Roads Ventures (formerly FGPE), based on an enterprise value of 260 million euros.

On February 23, 2017, InnoGames announced the purchase of the Mobile Games Warlords , which was produced by the Berlin-based development studio Woogas . In May 2017, MTG announced an increase in its stake to 51% of the shares through an investment of a further 82.6 million euros. On November 1st, 2017, the mobile versions of Elvenar were released.

In June 2018 InnoGames announced that it would continue production in Hamburg for a game previously developed in Düsseldorf. As a result, the office in Düsseldorf was closed on December 31, 2018. Due to the constant growth of InnoGames, the office space of the InnoHub start-up center had to be used for own use in 2018, which led to its closure.

In February 2019 InnoGames released the MMO strategy game God Kings for iOS and Android devices. In June 2019, InnoGames reported that the strategy game Forge of Empires had total sales of 500 million euros. In addition, in November 2019 the company announced that it had reached a total of one billion euros in sales. For the full year 2019, InnoGames reported an increase in sales to 190 million euros in February 2020. The company's apps were the main growth drivers.

criticism

Free-to-play games, which represent InnoGames' business model, are generally criticized for encouraging children, in particular, to spend carelessly and multiple times money for game advantages through quick and easily achievable successes for relatively small amounts of money.
