history

The institute was established in 1953/54 at the Philosophical Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin, initially as a department of library science. In 1954 the institute was founded. A forerunner institute existed from 1928 to 1934 under the direction of a founder of library science, Fritz Milkau .

After German reunification, the two library science courses of the Free University of Berlin and the Humboldt University of Berlin were merged. In the early 2000s, the Humboldt University considered closing the institute; However, it then decided in favor of a fundamental realignment and modernization and also made the necessary financial resources available.

The aim of the realignment started in 2006 was an internationally competitive institution based on the model of the "iSchools" or information school . The new curriculum was given a much stronger focus on digital development and the competencies required in its context. This includes in particular research and research methods. The IBI is a university institute with a strong research orientation. This is where it differs from the institutes and courses of study at the earlier universities of applied sciences.
