The Institute for Internet Security (if (is)) is an application-oriented research institute of the Westfälische Hochschule Gelsenkirchen Bocholt Recklinghausen in Gelsenkirchen .

history

The institute was opened in May 2005 by the then Federal Minister of the Interior, Otto Schily . The director of the institute is Norbert Pohlmann .

An advisory board advises the management of the institute on the main research areas and the cooperation with other companies and organizations. The advisory board currently includes the following personalities from business and administration:

• Udo Helmbrecht (former President of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and Director of the EU IT Security Agency European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA))
• Rainer Baumgart (CEO of secunet Security Networks AG )
• Rainer Fechner (board member of Alcatel-Lucent Deutschland AG )
• Robert Zehder (Senior Vice President Product Infrastructure at Deutsche Telekom AG )

Scientific profile

The research facility aims to create added value in terms of trustworthiness and security on the Internet. It carries out research projects with partners at home and abroad and cooperates with universities and research institutions. These include the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in Brazil, the Stevens Institute of Technology in the United States of America , the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences as well as the Ruhr University Bochum , the University of Bremen and the Technical University of Dresden .

The director and employees of the institute regularly comment on IT security issues in the press. The institute's research results are published on a national and international level.

Projects

The institute researches in particular in the areas of Internet early warning, trusted computing and email reliability. It also deals with other current IT security issues, such as the electronic ID card , identity management and the structural analysis of the Internet.

The main projects include:

• FIDeS - early warning and intrusion detection system based on combined methods of artificial intelligence

together with the Technology Center for Computer Science and Information Technology at the University of Bremen , Nicos AG, mobile solution group, ZF Friedrichshafen AG , T-Systems , algorithmica technologies

funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research

• tNAC - Trusted access control in networks based on Trusted Computing

together with Hanover University of Applied Sciences , Datus AG, Sirrix AG, Steria Mummert Consulting AG

funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research

• TURAYA - Development of an open, multilaterally more secure, DRM -capable security platform based on Trusted Computing, part of the EMSCB project

together with Ruhr University Bochum , TU Dresden , Sirrix AG, Escrypt GmbH

funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology

• FISHA - Framework for Information Sharing and Alerting

together with CERT Poland and CERT Hungary
