The International Academy of Journalism (Intajour), based in Hamburg, was a qualification and further training facility of the media company Bertelsmann for journalists from countries with limited freedom of the press and expression.

history

On the occasion of the Group's 175th birthday in 2010, Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA announced the founding of Intajour. The patron of the founding event was the President of the European Union, José Manuel Barroso , who stated in his speech that high quality journalism is a cornerstone of democracy.

Intajour saw the digitalization of the media as an opportunity for freedom of the press and freedom of expression worldwide. The so-called new media made it possible to come into direct contact with journalists all over the world and to support them in their work. With the qualification and training program “Journalism in the Digital World” Intajour wanted to prepare journalists from countries with limited freedom of the press for the digital future and in this way do their part to ensure that freedom of the media and freedom of expression have a future.

Werner Eggert was appointed as the founding director. The academy started work on January 1, 2011. The first application process for the 10-month training program “Journalism in the Digital World” started in May 2011. The first 12 scholarship holders arrived in Hamburg in September 2011. They successfully completed the training program in June 2012.

In May 2014 it became known that Bertelsmann is closing the academy again. The group did not comment on the reasons.

education

Intajour offered the 10-month qualification and training program “Journalism in the Digital World”. It included presence phases in Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin as well as e-learning phases. The academy uses the principle of hybrid learning , which combines the advantages of face-to-face phases and e-learning. The focus is on imparting knowledge in digital, multimedia journalism. Guest lecturers from media practice and the media industry supplemented the team of permanent and freelance employees. The international team of lecturers is either personally available during the attendance phases or uses digital media to teach the scholarship holders in webinars . The participants receive a scholarship for the attendance phases of the program, which covers all costs.

canditature

Applications for participation in the program were possible in March / April and were announced on the Intajour homepage or on the Facebook page.
