The International Union of Psychological Science ( IUPsyS ) is the international umbrella organization of national psychology associations, an association for the promotion of scientific psychology .

Organization and tasks

Members of the IUPsyS are 89 national psychology associations, for Germany the Federation of German Psychological Associations , for Switzerland the Swiss Society for Psychology and for Austria the Federation of Austrian Psychological Associations . Only one association is accepted per country. There are also 24 regional or national scientific organizations that are "Affiliate Members" (as partner organizations) in the IUPsyS.

Since 1952 it has been a member of the umbrella organization " International Council for Science (ICSU) ". She is also a member of the " International Social Science Council (ISSC) ".

According to Article 6 of the Statute, the objectives of the IUPsyS are:

  • To improve and promote the development of the science of psychology and the profession of psychologist.
  • Exchange of ideas and scientific information between psychologists from different countries.
  • Organize the International Congresses of Psychology and other events on topics of general or special interest in psychology.
  • to disseminate psychological knowledge through journalistic activity.
  • promote the exchange of publications and other communications between different countries.
  • Promote excellence in standards for the education, training, research and applications of psychology.
  • Encourage the development of psychological scientists and national associations through capacity building measures.
  • Promote international exchange, especially among students and young researchers.
  • Cooperation with other international, regional and national organizations on issues of mutual interest.

The IUPsyS publishes a magazine, "The International Journal of Psychology" (IJP), which was founded in 1966. There is also an online portal "Psychology Resources around the World", where current information, overviews and links to psychologists around the world are given.

history

The society emerged from the International Congresses for Psychology, which have taken place regularly since 1889. In the beginning there was a standing committee which coordinated the orientation and programming of the congresses. In 1905 the committee already had 16 member countries and 76 representatives. From 1932 (10th Congress) an executive committee with 7 members and a secretary was appointed as general representative. Its first secretary was the Swiss Édouard Claparède until his death in 1940, after which the American Herbert S. Langfeld took over.

1948 was on the XII. Congress in Edinburgh passed the resolution to found the society, 1951 for the XIII. Congress in Stockholm, the founding was completed - 11 national associations were founding members, another 9 were added in the course of the year. The name was International Union of Scientific Psychology until 1965.
