The International Federation of Vexillological Societies (FIAV) is an international union of 55 regional, national and multinational associations and institutions around the world. The FIAV defines itself as "an institution that collects knowledge about flags of all kinds, their shapes and functions and the scientific theories and principles." The English equivalent of the German name is International Federation of Vexillological Associations . Fédération internationale des associations vexillologiques would be the French name, and Federación Internacional de Asociaciones Vexilológicas would be the name of the FIAV in Spanish. These languages are the four official languages of the organization.

The FIAV flag was originally designed by Klaes Sierksma and was slightly modified by the Organizing Committee of the 2nd International Congress of Vexillology. The flag was introduced on September 3, 1967. The blue color is defined as PMS  U293 and the yellow color as PMS  U123. Flags for the three officers were approved in 1999 after being designed by former FIAV President William Crampton. All FIAV flags were slightly changed in 2007 by the 22nd session of the FIAV General Assembly in Berlin.

The included knot is a crossed weaver knot .
