Invitation to Dance is an American dance film from 1956 by and with Gene Kelly . Kelly depicts the story of a circus clown, a marine and the sailor Sindbad in dance.
action
The film is an episode film made up of three parts. In all three parts, the dance is at the center of the action. There is not a single spoken dialogue in this film, only before each episode Gene Kelly gives an introduction as moderator. In the first episode, titled Circus , Gene Kelly plays a clown who loves a prima ballerina . The second episode is called Ringaround the Rosy and here Gene Kelly plays a marine who follows the path of a bracelet that is constantly changing hands. In the third episode he then plays Sindbad , the sailor who found a magic lamp. This story is told as a mix of real and animated films .

The animation part from the episode Sindbad, the Navigator was made by Joseph Barbera and William Hanna . The music Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov was selected for this part .
