Iosif Iosifovich Charlemagne , and Joseph Maria Charlemagne-Baudet ( Russian Иосиф Иосифович Шарлемань Iosif Iosifovich Scharleman , Жозеф-Мария Шарлемань-Боде Schosef-Marija Scharleman-Bode ; * April 1 . Jul / 13. April 1824 greg. In St. Petersburg , † April 26 . jul / 8. May 1870 greg. ) was a Russian architect , draftsman and watercolorist .
Life
Charlemagne's father was the architect Iossif Ivanovich Charlemagne . Charlemagne's grandfather Jean Baptiste Charlemagne-Baudet was a sculptor in Rouen and came to St. Petersburg in 1777 at the invitation of Catherine II . Charlemagne attended the German Petri School from 1838 and then studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in the architecture class led by Alexander Pawlowitsch Brjullow . In 1846 he completed his studies as an artist, 2nd class.
In 1848 Charlemagne entered the civil service and began working in the court office as assistant to the architect Nikolai Yefimowitsch Yefimow in the construction of the New Hermitage (until 1851). Then he worked as assistant Auguste de Montferrand the character works for the monument to Nicholas I participated. He also worked as an assistant to Nikolai Leontjewitsch Benois . On behalf of the Imperial Court and also by private individuals , he planned buildings, but never took over the realization of the buildings and their construction supervision. For his project to build the dacha on Peterhof- Haussee for Grand Duke Michael Nikolajewitsch , Charlemagne was appointed a member of the Academy of Arts for Architecture in 1857.
Charlemagne became famous for his watercolor drawings . At times he was showered with commissions from patrons and the imperial family. At the end of 1852 he and his brother Adolf Iossifowitsch Charlemagne founded a small society of young people, artists and art lovers who met in the evening to draw. This resulted in the so-called Watercolor Fridays . During his stay abroad in 1860, Charlemagne made a whole series of vedute of Germany for the Grand Duchess Olga Fjodorovna .
Charlemagne died after a long and serious illness and was buried next to his father in St. Petersburg in the Catholic Vyborg Cemetery at the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary .
