action

The Wing Chun Grand Master Ip Man lived comfortably in Hong Kong in 1959 with his wife Wing-sing and his son Ip Ching . When the American Frank and his people want to take over the property on which Ip Ching's school is located, Ip Man tries to stop them. With the help of Cheung Tin-chi, a talented Wing Chun fighter, and the father of Ip Ching's classmate Cheung Fung, he makes it his mission to stop the Americans and bring about justice.

Cheung Tin-chi also tries to open a Wing Chun school, but fails due to a lack of financial resources and the lack of respect from the other masters in Hong Kong. Hoping for money and respect, Frank lets himself be hired by Frank's men and then ambushes Master Tam in his shop.

When the thugs that Frank hired kidnap several children in order to force the school principal to sell the property, Ip Man and Cheung Tin-chi, whose son was also kidnapped, fight together and free the children. The police arrest Frank's men. The newspaper reported extensively about the incident, but did not mention Cheung Tin-chi.

Meanwhile, Ip Man's wife Wing-sing is diagnosed with cancer, which she initially hides in order not to burden Ip Man. When Ip learns about the illness, he only devotes himself to his wife and spends a lot of time with her. When both are threatened in the hospital by a thug who was previously hired by Frank, there is a showdown in which the master and Frank stand face to face. Frank recognizes the martial art of Ip Man and promises to leave him alone from now on.

Cheung Tin-chi rents a classroom with his money and opens his own Wing-Chun school. In order to gain respect, he fights against the grand masters of kung fu and publicly challenges Ip Man, whose fighting style he denounces as inauthentic. When Ip does not show up on the announced date, but prefers to spend time with his sick wife, Cheung is appointed Grand Master of Wing-Chun without a fight. However, Ip's wife wishes to see Ip fight again before she dies; what starts as an exercise ends in a fight between Cheung and Ip. Cheung loses the fight and admits defeat, but this is not important to Ip - the only thing that matters to him is love for his wife.

In the final scene it is told that Ips wife died in 1960.

criticism

The film received mixed reactions from critics. He has a rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes , based on 43 reviews and also adorns himself with the “Certified Fresh” seal of the site.

The Hollywood Reporter found: "Wilson Yip's subtle staging and clever combination of dialogue and fight scenes raise this film above its mediocre and poorly researched script."

Maggie Lee of Variety magazine found the film less aggressively nationalistic than the second part of the Ip-Man series, but lacked the "humanity, ingenious Cantonese humor and visual flair of the first film." 5 stars.
