Ip Man (Original title: chin.葉 問 / 叶 问Pinyin Yè Wèn Jyutping Jip6 Man4 kant. Yip Man) is a Chinese martial arts film directed by Wilson Yip from 2008 . The film is based on the life of the martial artist and grandmaster Yip Man (1893-1972), who taught the martial art Wing Chun and whose most famous student was the martial artist and filmmaker Bruce Lee . The film focuses on events in Yip's life in Foshan city during the Second Sino-Japanese War .

action

The film is set in the 1930s. Ip Man, a wealthy martial artist, lives in Foshan with his wife Yong Cheng and son Ip Chun . The village is the center of several martial arts schools, which occasionally compete against each other to learn from one another. Although Ip Man is a respected and respected master of the martial art of Wing Chun, he avoids making a big fuss about himself. He only gives lessons behind closed doors on a few days. However, his wife would prefer him to spend the time with her and their child. One day, Jin Shan Zhao, an aggressive master of northern martial arts, comes to the village with his companions and challenges all the masters. After beating everyone, he wants to fight Ip Man as well. However, this initially refuses. Only when his wife agrees to fight does he start. Ip Man wins the fight and defends the reputation of the southern masters in the village.

During the Japanese invasion, which began in the course of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, the lives of all residents in the village changed. Ip Man's house is occupied by the Japanese and henceforth serves as their headquarters. Ip and his family lose their wealth and are forced to move into an old house. To support his family, Ip Man takes a job as a laborer in a coal mine. From there, the adjutant Sato repeatedly recruits workers for strange competitions held in a sports hall by the Japanese general Miura, a master of Japanese karate . The general lets Chinese fighters compete against his military trainees there. The Chinese get a small sack of rice for every fight they fight, whether they win or not. Most take up the challenge in order to be able to provide for their families.

When Ip Man's friend Wu Chi Lin doesn't return from a fight, he gets to the bottom of the matter and lets himself be selected to take part in a fight. He is taken to the gym with other Chinese. There he sees his old companion Master Liao fighting. He first defeats a Japanese fighter and receives a sack of rice in return. He then challenges three more opponents, but wants to give up early. When he tries to pick up the previously won sack of rice, Sato shoots him. This infuriates Ip Man, and he challenges ten Japanese karate fighters at the same time. A great fight ensues, which Ip Man comfortably wins. Instead of the ten sacks of rice actually won, Ip Man only takes Master Liao's, which he later gives to the Liaos family. General Miura is impressed with Ip Man's martial arts and wants to learn more about him. He also asks him to fight against him. But Ip Man does not go into it.

Ip Man visits his old friend Zhou Qing Quan, who owns a cotton mill in Foshan. He asks Ip Man for help. A gang of robbers led by Jin Shan Zhao harassed him and his employees and wants to extort money for goods that he stole from Zhou Qing Quan in a truck robbery. Ip Man then instructs the workers in Wing Chun for their self-defense. Meanwhile, General Miura is getting more and more impatient with Ip Man not returning to the arena to fight. He sends men to look for Ip Man. The soldiers harass Ip Man's family but are disabled in a quick fight. Now that the house is no longer safe, Ip Man and his family go into hiding. The band of robbers appears again in the cotton mill to extort the money again. A fight begins in which the workers apply the techniques Ip Man learned. In time, Ip Man appears, who successfully ends the fight. He admonishes Jin Shan Zhao. He should never return to the factory and leave the workers alone.

When Ip Man was at home, the village policeman, Li Zhao, came and warned him not to go to the cotton mill as Japanese soldiers would be waiting there to arrest him. Ip Man goes there despite the warning and is captured. General Miura tells Ip Man that his life would be spared if he taught Wing Chun to Japanese soldiers. However, he refuses and challenges the general to a fight. Miura accepted because of his love for martial arts, but also because rejecting the challenge would be a loss of prestige for the Japanese. The fight takes place in the center of Foshan in public on an elevated fighting stage. After an extremely short and tough fight, Ip Man wins the match. Adjutant Sato suddenly shoots Ip Man in the shoulder. This falls from the stage to the floor. This sparked a brawl between the Chinese audience and the Japanese soldiers. Meanwhile, police officer Li kills Adjutant Sato with his own pistol. The movie ends. In the credits it is mentioned that Ip Man recovered from the injury and fled to Hong Kong with his family . There he opened a Wing Chun school and taught numerous students, including Bruce Lee .
