Iquitos (born May 22, 2012 ) is an English thoroughbred horse . The bay stallion was bred by Adlerflug out of Irika at the Evershorst Stud near Hanover Airport . The horse, which is unusually small with a stick height of 157 cm, was one of the best horses of the year in the years 2016–18 and became the crowd favorite of German turf.

Iquitos comes from one of the oldest German lines of mare, which goes back to the mare Irene de S imported from France by the Königlich Württembergischen Gestüt Weil around 1908 . She is the main line of the Evershorst Stud.

In order to make optimal use of the large area, there is often a golf course on many racetracks. So it happened that a group of Cologne golf friends, who got together under the name Stall Mulligan , found interest in horse riding and bought the somewhat too small yearling Iquitos from the grande dame of the Evershorst Stud Erika Buhmann for € 10,000 at a Christmas party in 2013. In the beginning the ambitions in basic sport were rather modest, which was expressed by a mention for the Harzburg super handicaps, the most highly endowed and also the most difficult races for the lower performance classes.

Racing career

At the age of three, Iquitos made his debut on April 26th, 2015 rather inconspicuously with a 5th place in Hoppegarten behind Turfdonna , who later won the Diana Prize. At his second start in a Maiden race on the Neue Bult , his home track in Hanover, Iquitos narrowly won on May 17, 2015. His third race track appearance on June 8, 2015 in a Compensation III in Baden-Baden was described as spectacular. In such races, an attempt is usually made to win as close as possible to minimize the weight for later races. However, Iquitos broke away from the competition, resisted all "braking attempts" of his rider and won by eleven lengths, which is very unusual in equalizing races. With that, some experts became aware of him and prophesied a great future for the little stallion.

The group races envisaged for him as a result , however, had entry deadlines of several months, so that this time was bridged with a start in Compensation II on August 2, 2015 in Düsseldorf. He also won this race, where he had to compete under maximum weight against experienced and older horses. Because of the high weight and the short distance of 1700 meters, the victory was very close. On August 16, 2018, he finally made his group debut in Krefeld and was only barely defeated by the then reigning Derby- Second Palace Prince over 2050 meters . The first group victory at this point seemed only a matter of time when a severe, life-threatening colic overtook him. At the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover it was possible to save the horse's life.

After a long recovery period, Iquitos returned to the racetrack on April 24, 2016 with a fourth place at the Dahlwitz Prize in Hoppegarten. A good month later he secured an impressive victory in Baden-Baden at the Grand Prix of the Baden Economy (Group II), the most important spring race on the German racing calendar. This was followed by a good second place at the Hansa Prize in Hamburg (Group II), a 4th place at the Dallmayr Prize in Munich (Group I) and finally, as the culmination of the season, victory at the Grand Prix of Baden (Group I). This earned him an invitation to the Japan Cup at the end of the racing season, where he came in seventh. Before that, he was only fifth in the European Prize in Cologne and fourth in the Bavarian Grand Prix . The racing audience finally voted “Krümel”, as it was affectionately known because of its size, for Galopper of the Year 2016. He also won the German Racing Champions League of 2016, which was held for the first time .

Iquitos, placed second at the Baden Grand Prix 2017

In 2017 he grew up with Guignol and Dschingis Secret, two equal opponents who often relegated him to second place in the important group races. However, he won another Group I race with the Dallmayr Prize in Munich. In 2018, Guignol finally had to end his career due to an injury and Dschingis Secret could no longer quite build on the form of the previous year, so that Iquitos with victories at the Grand Prix of the Baden Economy (Group II) and the Grand Prix of Bavaria clearly again as that best German horse of the year. Again this year he won the German Racing Champions League and was again voted Galopper of the Year 2018. He was the only six-year-old racehorse to win this award.
