The Irishman Creek is a small 40 km long river in the Mackenzie District of the Region Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The Irishman Creek rises on the southern flank of the 2330  m high Mount Stevenson , which is one of the southern foothills of the New Zealand Alps . From its headwaters, the stream runs in a few turns towards the south, crosses under the Tekapo Canal in an artificially created tunnel tube at canal kilometer 13 and finally flows after 40 km as a right tributary into the Tekapo River . The New Zealand State Highway 8 crosses the creek 1.5 km south of the Tekapo Canal .

About 12 km west of Irishman Creek is Lake Pukaki and about 10 km east of Lake Alexandrina and about two kilometers further is Lake Tekapo . The landscape between the lakes and a small settlement on Irishman Creek was named after the creek.

history

Bach and the landscape in New Zealand was a small blue and white wooden house known that the roadside New Zealand State Highway 8 " in the middle of nowhere " ( in the middle of nowhere is) and surmounted by a sign reading " Irishman Creek " hangs. Photographed many times, the scene also received attention in various television programs in New Zealand and became known nationwide. Outwardly looking like a toilet house, this depot for mail and parcels is supplied by trucks with mail deliveries for the small settlement 2 km away.

Historic area

The area around the intersection of New Zealand State Highway 8 , Tekapo Canal and Irishman Creek to Lake Pukaki , which is referred to as Pt Run 343 and belongs to the New Zealand state, was designated a historic area on June 23, 1983 by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and the Power House and Workshop buildings are listed in Category II of buildings worthy of protection.
