Irma Schaichet , née Löwinger (born April 15, 1895 in Budapest , † July 30, 1988 in Zurich ) was a Swiss pianist and piano teacher of Hungarian origin.

Life

Irma Löwinger was born in Budapest on April 15, 1895, the fourth of six children to the Jewish grocer couple Gyula and Rosa Löwinger-Duschak. Thanks to her mother's initiative, Irma Löwinger was able to enter the Royal Hungarian Academy of Music (today the Franz Liszt Academy of Music ) in 1901 , where she received her first piano lessons from graduate students. This was followed by training in the preparatory class by Arnold Székely and in the academy class by Árpád Szendy . After her teaching diploma in 1914, she attended the concert training class with Béla Bartók , Leó Weiner (chamber music) and Zoltán Kodály (music theory) and graduated successfully in 1917 with the concert diploma with Béla Bartók.

Thanks to a scholarship, she moved to Zurich in 1917, where she became a student of Ferruccio Busoni . In 1919 she married the stateless violinist and conductor Alexander Schaichet in Zurich , with whom she subsequently also worked musically for a lifetime. In 1927 they received Swiss citizenship. The couple had three children: Mirjam, Peter and Vera. During World War II it campaigned for Jewish refugees. Irma Schaichet died on July 30, 1988 in Zurich.

Her great-grandchildren include a. the politician and entrepreneur Nicola Forster and the Geneva politician Simon Brandt.

Musical work

Irma Schaichet made a name for herself at home and abroad as a pianist and music teacher. Together with Alexander Schaichet, she performed regularly as a duo partner in Switzerland and performed continuously with his Zurich Chamber Orchestra, which existed from 1920 to 1943 . Other duo partners were Szimon Goldberg (violin) and Joachim Stutschewsky (cello). She gave concerts under conductors such as Volkmar Andreae , Hermann Scherchen , Erich Schmid , Georg Solti and Felix Weingartner .

Repertoire and special features

Irma Schaichet cultivated a wide-ranging repertoire from composers from the Bach era to new music . Special attention was paid to the Hungarian composers Franz Liszt , Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók , whose sonata for two pianos and percussion she played in Zurich in 1938 together with Georg Solti shortly after the premiere. She also cared for Swiss composers and gave world premieres by Willy Burkhard , Charles Oboussier, Robert Blum and Albert Moeschinger .

Music teacher

Irma Schaichet was a sought-after music teacher and trained professional musicians privately ( Swiss Music Education Association - SMPV ). She is considered the discoverer of the pianist prodigy Annie Fischer and the soprano Maria Stader . Theodor Lichtmann, Hanny Schmid Wyss and Brigitte Farner were among her most important students.
