Irshad Panjatan
Irshad Panjatan (born September 7, 1931 in Hyderabad ) is an Indian - German actor and pantomime .
Life
Panjatan was born in Hyderabad in 1931 as the second youngest of seven siblings in an upper-class and socially committed family. His brother Abid Hussain (1926–2012) was a renowned economist and between 1990 and 1992 India's ambassador to the United States. Irshad Panjatan initially worked as an aircraft engineer, but decided in 1950 to pursue an acting career and moved to New Delhi for this . He took acting lessons and became a member of the well-known Hindustani Theater in the 1950s .
Eventually Panjatan began to occupy himself intensively with pantomime . From the 1960s onwards he had great success with his solo pantomime performances. Since pantomime was practically not widespread in India before Panjatan, he is considered an important pioneer of this art in his home country. From 1965 Panjatan worked occasionally in Indian films, although his film appearances remained irregular. Instead, he focused on pantomime appearances around the world. Panjatan has lived in Berlin since the 1970s. He has a daughter with his German wife Ingrid, whom he married in 1975. For decades he ran a pantomime school in Berlin.
He became known to a wider public in 2001 through his role as the Shoshone chief "Cunning Lurch" in the parody western Der Schuh des Manitu . He was rarely seen in front of the camera before, and has since made many appearances in film and television. In 2017 he was again in front of the camera for Michael Herbig at Bullyparade - The Film .
