Isaac Samuel Reggio
Isaak Samuel Reggio ( acronym Jaschar ; born August 15, 1784 in Gorizia , † August 29, 1855 in Gorizia) was an Italian rabbi and educator .
Life
Reggio studied Hebrew and rabbinism with his father Abraham Vita, who later became the rabbi of Gorizia , and at the same time received a secular education at the grammar school.
His father attached great importance to the religious education of his son, who turned out to be very gifted. In addition to his Italian mother tongue, he mastered German, French and Latin as well as several Semitic languages .
In 1802 he published an article in the Neuwied newspaper in which he solved a complicated mathematical problem, which also earned him recognition as a mathematician.
In 1803 Reggio went to Trieste , where he initially worked as a tutor for a wealthy family. There he became a friend of Mordecai Isaak de Cologna.
In 1807 he returned to Gorizia and married the daughter of a rich man. He settled in Gorizia to devote himself to his studies. When Illyria became French in 1810, the French governor appointed him professor at the Lyceum. When Illyria became Austrian three years later, he had to give up this position again due to anti-Jewish laws.
He devoted himself entirely to the study of books and made a name for himself as a religious philosopher .
When in 1822 an imperial decree stipulated that no one could become a rabbi without a degree in philosophy, Reggio published a call for the establishment of a rabbinical seminary in Venice . As a result, a rabbinical seminary was founded in Padua in 1829, for which he created the statutes and the training program.
Among other things, he translated the Bible into Italian and wrote a commentary on it. As an opponent of casuistry , he was against Haggadic interpretations of the Bible and the pilulist study of the Talmud. He was attacked by many German rabbis for his liberal views; even his father disagreed with many of his views.
