location

The Bass Islands

The vineyards are located on the island of North Bass Island within Lake Erie . The island is part of the administrative unit of Ottawa County. The only municipality on the island is Isle Saint George, which according to the 2000 census has 13 permanent residents. A total of 15 families live on the island. Half of the 278 hectare island is planted with vines.

Lake Erie is the warmest of the Great Lakes and therefore enables viticulture in an otherwise too cold area. Especially during the 200 day long growing season of the vine, the temperatures on the island are higher than on the nearby mainland.

The grape varieties Catawba , Delaware , Gewürztraminer , Pinot Noir and Riesling , which are adapted to the cool wine-growing climate, determine the variety of grapes on Isle St. George. In winter, the vines are protected by the snow from Lake Effect Snow .
