It's a Beautiful Day is the debut album by the American rock band It's a Beautiful Day from San Francisco . It was released in 1969 and peaked at number 47 on the US charts.

The cover of the album by George Hunter and Kent Hollister is based on the cover of a magazine from around 1900 and was voted number 24 on its list of the 100 best covers by Rolling Stone .

Emergence

In December 1967 David and Linda LaFlamme lived in the attic of a Victorian house in Seattle . White Bird , the band's best-known song, was written here when they captured the mood as they looked out of the skylight on a rainy winter's day.

“Where the 'white bird' thing came from… We were like caged birds in that attic. We had no money, no transportation, the weather was miserable. We were just barely getting by on a very small food allowance provided to us. It was quite an experience, but it was very creative in a way. "

"Where the 'White Bird' thing came from ... We were like trapped birds under the roof. We had no money, no means of transport, and the weather was miserable. We only got by with a small meal allowance. It was quite an experiment, but in a creative way. "

- Toby Gray :

Back in San Francisco, the band had their breakthrough as opening act for Cream on their farewell tour. You jumped in for the band Traffic , where Steve Winwood was ill. They owed their record deal with CBS to the rave reviews .

music

The sound of the album is shaped by the violin playing by David LaFlammes, a former violinist of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, who takes on the role of lead guitar here. In addition, rather unusual instruments such as celesta and harpsichord ( Girl With No Eyes ) are used in rock music . The melody of the instrumental piece Bombay Calling was used by Deep Purple on the album In Rock for the intro of their song Child in Time . Wasted Union Blues is a psychedelically distorted blues-rock and with Time is , the last song on the album, a hard rock piece is also represented.
