Ivan Abramowitsch Hannibal
Ivan Abramovich Hannibal ( Russian Иван Абрамович Ганнибал * June 5 jul. / 16th June 1735 greg. On the farm Karjaküla at Reval ; † October 12 jul. / 24. October 1801 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a Russian -marshal the naval artillery and general en chef .
Life
Hannibal was the eldest of 11 children of Peter I's godson, Abraham Petrowitsch Hannibal and his second wife Christina Regina von Sjöberg. In 1744 Hannibal was drafted into the Imperial Russian Navy against the wishes of his parents and sent to the St. Petersburg Naval Artillery School. After graduation, he studied at the St. Petersburg Marine Institute.
In 1769 the lieutenant colonel of the artillery Hannibal was appointed master of the naval artillery. During the Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774) was one of he the Mediterranean sent first archipelago expedition to. In April 1770 a landing force under Hannibal's command took the fortress of Navarino after a 15-day siege . In July 1770 he took part in the naval battle of Çeşme . Then he received the Order of St. George III. Class.
In 1772 Hannibal became major general , in 1776 general master of the naval artillery and in 1777 a member of the Admiralty College . Under his leadership, the city of Kherson was founded in 1778 and he became the commander of the Kherson fortress. He organized the delivery of wood from the upper Dnieper , hired more than 500 carpenters and quickly built a shipyard . Within three years a palace, an admiralty, a foundry , an arsenal , barracks and private houses were built in the city . There were foreign trading houses, and Greek and Italian immigrants accepted Hannibal's invitation.
In 1779 Hannibal was promoted to lieutenant general. In 1780 he received 10,000 dessiatin land. In 1784 he retired from service as General en Chef due to illness and because of a conflict with the almighty Grigory Alexandrowitsch Potjomkin and settled on his Suida estate near Gatchina .
Hannibal was not married and died childless. He was buried in the Lazarus Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery . His great-nephew Alexander Pushkin honored him with verses in his family book.
